Boris Nemtsov, an avid critic of Vladimir Putin and a former Russian Deputy Prime Minister, was shot four times by an unidentified individual right near the Kremlin on Feb. 27, 2015, before falling down dead. The shooter then reportedly took off in a white car. A female companion was with him at the time of the killing. Here are ten facts you should know about him and his views:
Boris Nemtsov was the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was considered a student of the first Russian President Boris Yeltsin. Yeltsin chose him as his successor. Unfortunately, Vladimir Putin took the top job.
Nemtsov and Putin were enemies. Even during Nemtsov’s years as Governor of Nizhny Novgorod, one of Russia’s largest cities, he vocally criticized The Putin administration, not something that’s easy to do. In a blog posting about his protest, Nemtsov wrote that he and his followers were marching against “Putin’s aggression”. He even went as far as to compare Putin to Stalin.
In his memoirs, Nemtsov revealed that he was baptized Russian Orthodox in secret. That was despite the fact that his mother was Jewish. It was also speculated around the time of Boris Yeltsin’s abdicationthat Nemtsov was passed over because of his religion. Though he himself had always said that religion played an “insignificant role” in his life.
The murder took place a couple of hours after Nemtsov gave an interview, speaking about the upcoming an anti-war rally that was going to take place on the weekend.
He was an avid organizer of street demonstrations against President Putin and was sentenced to 15 days in jail for participating in one unauthorized rally in 2010. After his arrest Mr Netsov continued to be a critic of Kremlin, calling for the 2011 elections to be rerun.
In December 2013, Nemtsov said on behalf of his party: “We support Ukraine’s course toward European integration […] By supporting Ukraine, we also support ourselves. The companion he was with at the time of his death was from Kiev.”
