Every office has it’s challenges, politics and oddly put together relationships. It’s always an eclectic mix of people with a variety of goals, directions, abilities and business savvy. The tough part for most employees is navigating the relationships and knowing who to avoid and who to hang with. It may be one of the more difficult parts of any role, especially when you’re new to your position.
So who should we avoid?
10. The Shape-Shifter
The Shape Shifter is that person whose opinion changes with each person they pass by. This one is a hard one to be around, because you never know what they’re thinking. They might be on the same page with you one day, then completely flip-flop the next. They go with the “polls” and not the truth or best direction. They tend to not have any firm foundation in their business plans.
Why not hang with them? This person will cause mostly confusion.
The positive – they may help you be more firm in what you believe.
9. The Astronaut
The astronaut is a person who floats around the office, seems to be important, but really does nothing. Sometimes this person seems to have a some great insight. Sometimes this person throws names around like falling stars to prove their worth. Most of the time, this person has no clue to understanding your role or the business as a whole. This person is often sneaky and most look at their role with the thought “What do they actually do here?”
Why not hang with them? This person will cause mostly laziness.
The positive – they may help you focus more on working hard.
8. The Mountain Climber
The Mountain Climber is a person who is in your company only to get the next role and move up to the next adventure. They step on who they have to step on. They pull anyone down that gets in their way. They take sometimes crazy risks to move up and get to that next rung in the ladder. They don’t care about those around them, and tend to look for ways to use others to put them in a position to climb up.
Why not hang with them? This person will cause mostly discomfort.
The positive – they may help you be more satisfied with your role.
7. The Pied Piper
This is a person who tries to get you to jump on the bandwagon and join in something that isn’t really relevant to your role. These can be very persuasive people and draw you int conversations that are so irrelevant to you and the company, that it seems you are working for a different team. The problem here, is that so many others fall into this trap, that it becomes part of the company conversation, and many people follow it.
Why not hang with them? This person will cause mostly misdirection.
The positive – they may help you keep more focused on your tasks.
6. The Romancer
This is a person that takes every relationship in the office as a way to get in good with the bosses. They schmooze and fake compliment everyone so that they are looked at as the best of everything. They use every connection to help themselves and use every person to create only what’s best for them. They know the perfect words to say to get their way, and have such a command of the english language that they seem brilliant, but they’re pulling you to wrong direction.
Why not hang with them? This person will cause mostly selfishness.
