BETHESDA, Md. (INTELLIHUB) — Lockheed Martin was reportedly pleased after a recent test of ATHENA (Advanced Test High Energy Asset), a high-powered experimental fiber-optical laser, went well ending with the molten decimation of an old Ford pickup truck’s engine manifold just seconds after the 30-kW test laser was fired from a distance of 1 mile away.
“The demonstration marked the first field testing of an integrated 30-kilowatt, single-mode fiber laser weapon system prototype. Through a technique called spectral beam combining, multiple fiber laser modules form a single, powerful, high-quality beam that provides greater efficiency and lethality than multiple individual 10-kilowatt lasers used in other systems.”, reads a portion of a recent press release posted on Lockheed Martin’s official website.
Needless to say due to its versatility and performance the manufacture is touting ATHENA as a smooth operator which can slowly demobilize targets rather than explode them, minimizing collateral damage, injuries, and death — but rest assured on the flip-side of that coin ATHENA, as sexy as she sounds, could also be used in other ways far from humane.
