White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest is defending a proposal by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to ban AR-15 ammunition. Earnest calls it a “common sense” approach.

“This seems to be an area where everyone should agree, that if there are armor piercing bullets available that can fit into easily concealed weapons, that it puts our law enforcement at considerable more risk,” Earnest explained when questioned about the ban by White House reporter Fred Lucas.

The proposed “framework” would ban the 5.56-millimeter “M855 green tip” rifle bullet to prevent the ammunition from being used in handguns. The ATF has requested public comment before making a decision.

Republican lawmakers have opposed the ban, submitting a letter to ATF director B. Todd Jones. “Millions upon millions of M855 rounds have been sold and used in the U.S., yet the ATF has not even alleged, much less offered evidence, that even one such round has ever been fired from a handgun at a police officer,” the letter reads. Earnest said that the ATF was considering the ban via its “standard process” for such actions, and directed questions to the bureau.

The National Rifle Association vowed to fight the ban, asserting that the organization would work with members of Congress on legislation to stop the ATF proposal. The potential ban has angered gun-rights advocates and is currently causing a run on the specific type of ammunition across the United States.

The run on AR-15 ammunition continues apace as gun stores across the country report a “buying frenzy” that has exhausted supplies in anticipation of an ATF ban on M855 “green tip” bullets, which some gun owners fear could lead to a total ban on tactical rifles. Fearful that this is just the first step towards the eventual goal of banning semi-automatic rifles altogether, gun owners have responded by stockpiling the bullets, which are the cheapest available for AR-15′s, prompting nationwide shortages. As we previously reported, gun stores in Indiana, Anchorage, Florida, and Springfield, Missouri are all reporting that they have completely sold out of the ammunition. In 1986, the Congress amended the Gun Control Act by adding certain provisions to prohibit the manufacture and import of armor piercing ammunition, and prohibit licensed manufacturers and importers from selling or delivering armor piercing ammunition. It has become crystal clear to me, they want war with American citizens. They will not listen to reason or statistics regarding firearms. They could care less what the constitution says. Citizens seem to be in a state of denial about what is happening. Ask any military strategist and they will tell you that the recent chain of events signals a possible offensive posturing. Just look at what has happened over the past 7 years, NDAA, massive ammo purchases, no more hesitation targets, top terrorists threat is veteran’s, gun owners, constitutional loving citizens, unprecedented spying, net neutrality which will hinder our ability to communicate with each other, open borders which could facilitate the invasion of real terrorists, purge of military leaders, police misconduct is at an all time high, the president is acting like a dictator totally ignoring congress,. And that is just a sample. At the risk of sounding paranoid, I would have to say that America is under a very sophisticated attack. Of course they want us disarmed, they are about to go for broke.   I’ll bet if you look into it he is a major stockholder in the ammo makers. He has done more to stimulate firearm sales and ammo sales in the history of country.
