America’s infrastructure system—from its dams, bridges, roads, airports, etc.—is deteriorating and in need of serious updating. It’s an problem most people totally agree on, and as John Oliver noted on Monday, even has the focus of a “total idiot” like Donald Trump. Besides all this, the country continues to be pretty apathetic in doing anything about it.
“The lack of political urgency in tackling this problem is insane,” Oliver revealed. “And you cannot tell me that you are not interested in this, because every summer, people flock to see our infrastructure threatened by terrorists and aliens.”
In hopes to cure America’s happy indifference to our crumbling infrastructure, Last Week Tonight took a signal to from our movie-going habits by making a gripping, Armageddon-like summer smash to get people freaked out enough and definitely start working on this major problem. Enjoy!!
The average age of the 84,000 dams in the country is 52 years old. The nation’s dams are aging and the number of high-hazard dams is on the rise. Many of these dams were built as low-hazard damsprotecting undeveloped agricultural land.
However, with an increasing population and greater development below dams, the overall number of high-hazard dams continues to increase, to nearly 14,000 in 2012.
The number of deficient dams is estimated at more than 4,000, which includes 2,000 deficient high-hazard dams.
The Association of State Dam Safety Officials estimates that it will require an investment of $21 billion to repair these aging, yet critical, high-hazard dams. http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/dams/
“Infrastructure, it’s all of our roads, bridges, dams, levees, airports, power grids, pretty much anything that can be demolished in an action movie,” John Oliver says to begin his piece last night on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
America’s crumbling infrastructure is no laughing matter and undoubtedly not a sexy or glamorous subject, but Oliver does a great job showing what an important issue it is and why it requires our immediate attention.
The Rabbit Hole Goes Real Deep, Find Out How Deep… HERE
I think the infrastructure is not getting fixed because they know something we don’t. They know it would be a waste of time and money. They have to modernize the FEMA camps and buy more guillotines to lop of our heads for when we get hit by comet Ison returning which is being driven by the alien lizards who escaped from Dulce, NM, after killing US citizens in genetic experiments. That simple.
See, I could be FEEEEEEEER POOOOOOORN© writer at BIN!
You really could. That was awsome.
Awesome not awsome. Sorry.
Best submission you’ve ever made, Jay. Hands down, no kidding. I’m impressed you did it.
We have water main breaks constantly in our city as well as sewer failures. These are just in our little area so the scope nationally is hard to fathom. We have several homes in our neighborhood that still have drilled wells and have partnered with these neighbors to use our Emergency Well Tubes to draw water from wells to get clean water in the event of a grid failure where there is no power. You don’t have to pull the well pump to use this tool. Here is the website if interested, http://www.emergencywelltube.com.
The Obama’s stimulus money was sold to the American public with the promise of fixing our infrastructure. What happened to that?
Just take a look at where Bush’s stimulus money went?????
Just in case your memory is a little short, it went to the “to big to fail” banks!!!!!
OK. Why is the Dept. of Transportation broke? They have been collecting these gasoline taxes for decades and repairs have not been made to the infrastructure! So, what SLUSH FUND have the politicians poured all that money into so that they can rob it from the purpose for which it was intended?
