Breitbart News runs this “Exclusive” report titled, “GOP Primary campaign against weakened John McCain by AZ Republicans increasingly likely.” Conservative Republicans living in Arizona have grown ever more dissatisfied with the liberal antics of this over-the-hill self-anointed “maverick” who has not represented us for decades. The ire has erupted into censure resolutions at various county meetings and at the annual state Republican Statutory meeting of elected delegates —- who clearly have had their fill of John McCain.
Matthew Boyle, writing for Breitbart, muses that U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ CD-5) is eyeing a challenge to McCain. When Salmon considered such a run in 2010, the word in political circles was he had gotten the horse’s-head-in-the-bed message and prudently left his aspirations unfulfilled. McCain is nothing if not ruthless when confronted and has no compunctions about lying to briefly configure himself as a conservative when election season rolls around. It would be a major stunner if Salmon throws caution to the winds this time around.
McCain wins with the votes of the state’s senior population and newcomers who recognize his ubiquitous name and have little other information. His key advantage is the disengaged, apathetic voter.
Sen. Kelli Ward is another story. An accomplished woman —- a physician —- serving her second term in the Arizona senate, she has been traveling the state, sizing up her support. Unlike McCain, who receives jeers, boos and turned backs, she has been met with enthusiastic crowds who see her conservative perspective as manna from political heaven.
Ward told Breitbart News she thinks Congress needs more doctors like her, “people in the trenches who actually want to fight Obamacare not ‘yes men’ who want to keep socializing our medical system and leading to single-payer, that’s no good for patients, no good for doctors, no good for anybody.”
Kelli Ward’s husband Mike is a surgeon as well as a Colonel in the AZ Air National Guard where he serves as Arizona’s State Air Surgeon. The couple have three children and reside in Lake Havasu City, where Sen. Ward represents Legislative District 5.
Over two weeks ago we posted “AZ 2016 U.S. Senate race takes bright, right turn,” detailing the emergence of KelliPAC, an Independent Expenditure Committee put together by supporters of Kelly Ward, hoping to coax her into taking on McCain.
Seeing Red AZ shares their enthusiasm. It’s time to move forward with a conservative winner.
