Johnny Raheem Broughton Jr., 25, of Walterboro, was taken into custody on the morning of March 5 after law enforcement officers conducted a two-hour search of a wooded area near Exit 42 of I-95.
Strickland said further interviews determined that Broughton acted in self-defense when he allegedly shot Edward D. Stephens, 28, in the right hand during an altercation in the 9000 block of Augusta Highway on the morning of March 5. The bullet passed through Stephens’ hand and entered his left bicep.
