Here are ten odd cases of sniffing. Feel free to share the article and your knowledge learned on your social media channels:
Everyone knows that dogs have a very good sense of smell, especially airport and police dogs. They dedicate 40 times more of their brain to processing smells. In the dense forests of Nigeria and Cameroon, scientists use detection dogs to sniff out the poop of a rare type of gorilla (Cross River Gorillas) so that they can learn more about them. Scientists do not just tell the difference between primate by what they eat, but by their feces as well. The information is then used to estimate the population size and the numbers in the social group.
It is argued that when you lose one of your senses, your other senses are heightened. Those who know Hoby Wedler would not dare to disagree. The 27 year old Ph.d student has become popular at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. He leads a “Tasting in the Dark” contest where participants are blindfolded and learn to appreciate and assess wine much like he does.
Wedler’s sense of smell is quite special. He can distinguish an intersection by its smell. Once he also was able to tell that one item of mail was not from the mailman, but from a neighbour down the street, just by its scent.
Richards is well known for his guitar skills for the legendary rock group, The Rolling Stones. However there is another aspect of Keith Richards that not many people know about. In 2010, in his autobiography, Richards admitted to sniffing his dad’s ashes. It was too painful for him to spread the ashes.
In 1981, John Walters released on his all-time cult classics, “Polyester”. The film starred Divine, a real life drag queen. The unique feature of this film was that it was presented in Odorama. Odorama films are experienced with scratch n’ sniff cards given to audience members. Viewers watch the movie and when a number appears on the screen, they scratch the scent of the same number. There were a total of 10 smells.
Flo is a dog that belongs to Marian Cooper of Birmingham, England. The dog persistently nudged and sniffed at Cooper’s right breast until she decided to check herself out and discovered a lump. Her GP referred her to a local hospital where she was found to have a grade 3 malignant tumor which was later removed. If it hadn’t been removed it would have grown. After the removal, Flo’s behaviour became normal again.
