A U.S. Border Patrol agent reportedly shot and killed a “suspected illegal border crosser” Thursday after being assaulted near the U.S. border with Canada, according to local media.
The agent was patrolling the border near Sumas, Washington, around 2:30 p.m. when the man, whose identity has not yet been released, confronted the agent on Kneuman Road, The Bellingham Herald reported. The agent then reportedly shot the man in the head, which prompted a call over police radio requesting immediate backup. The herald reported that multiple radio dispatches reported the agent was hit with pepper spray, which didn’t seriously injure him.
Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation led by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Bill Elfo told The Herald. Some 3/4 miles of Kneuman Road were taped off while the agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Border Patrol and local police investigated the scene.
Guns.com contacted multiple agencies involved in the investigation and is awaiting further details as they develop.
