RELATED STORY: Iraq Arrests ISIL’s US, Israeli Military Advisors In Mosul
The White House cannot confirm early reports claiming that US and Israeli military advisors were allegedly arrested while aiding the Islamic State in Iraq.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington does not have information to confirm press reports that US and Israeli military advisors were arrested while allegedly aiding Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Iraq, a US State Department official told Sputnik on Tuesday.
“We have no information to indicate that this report is true,” the official stated.
Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported earlier that Iraqi counter-terrorism forces arrested four foreign military advisors from the United States and Israel, who were allegedly aiding the IS.
The advisors were reportedly captured in an operation codenamed “The Sting of a Scorpion” in a headquarters from where the IS organized its military operations in Iraq’s Northern Province of Nineveh.
The detained advisors have been transferred to Baghdad, according to the report.
The US is leading a coalition of more than 60 nations and has been launching airstrikes against the IS in Iraq since last August, and in Syria since September.
The United States and its allies agreed to train and equip Syrian opposition fighters as part of their efforts to fight the IS.
