ALEC Threatening Liberal Blogs: Common Cause Gets “Cease And Desist Letter” To Stop Its Climate Change Writing (Picture)
Common Cause is under legal threat from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)!The secretive corporate lobbying group has sent us a “cease and desist” letter, threatening legal action if we don’t stop talking about its history of denying climate change and blocking the progress needed to address it.

ALEC demands “an immediate retraction” of our statements calling out its pattern of climate change denial. This strong-arm, scare tactic is an effort to shut down public debate about its policies and influence.
Or maybe it’s a desperate ploy to distract from the parade of corporations that have recently decided that bankrolling ALEC is not good for business. Over 100 companies have left ALEC thanks to public pressure from thousands of citizens across the country.
Either way, we stand by the fairness and accuracy of our statements on ALEC. And we stand by the tens of thousands of Common Cause members calling on major corporations to end their support of ALEC.
ALEC claims it does not deny climate change but you be the judge. Although ALEC admits that “…human activity has and will continue to alter the atmosphere of the planet,” it will only say that this “…may lead to demonstrable changes in the climate.”
It goes even further, suggesting these changes could be “…possibly beneficial climatic changes.”
ALEC also pushes the tired climate deniers’ line that “…a great deal of scientific uncertainty surrounds the nature of these prospective changes…”
ALEC actively peddles climate denial presentations and legislation to state lawmakers. ALEC’s leaders have called global warming “bad science” and claimed, “I don’t know the science on that.” They even featured an article called, “Top 10 Myths About Global Warming”, on their website.
That sure sounds like climate change denial to me.
