Armenians worldwide are marking an anniversary of an Ottoman genocide of up to 1.5 million of their people a century ago. Commemoration services are expected to draw millions in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, and abroad.

German President Joachim Gauck has condemned the Armenian genocide, adding that “in remembering it, we are not putting anyone who is alive today in the dock.”
“The fate of the Armenians is exemplary for the history of mass destructions, ethnic cleansings, expulsions and, yes, the genocides during the 20th century,” he said.

The Armenian Church conferred sainthood on Armenians killed by Ottoman forces 100 years ago.
“During the dire years of the genocide of the Armenians, millions of our people were uprooted and massacred in a premeditated manner, passed through fire and sword, tasted the bitter fruits of torture and sorrow,” Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II, said at the ceremony on Thursday.
