A man police say tried to break into a Fairfield home Sunday afternoon is in the hospital after being shot by the resident.

Detectives were called in. Crane says they learned Gaines allegedly tried to break into a residence in the 200 block of Daphne Drive. One of the residents retrieved a gun and shot Gaines.
