For the second year in a row, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has decided that the federal government needs to grow more cannabis than it initially anticipated.

In a proposal that will published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, DEA Administrator Michele Lenohart says that since first signing off on a plan for the feds to produce 125,000 grams of marijuana in 2015, the agency has become aware that “research and product development involving cannabidiol [CBD] is increasing beyond that previously anticipated.”

Interest in CBD-rich strains of marijuana has skyrocketed as media coverage featuring children who use the drug to treat severe epilepsy has spurred a growing number of states to pass laws allowing for limited access.

DEA now says the feds should produce 400,000 grams of marijuana this year, more than three times what it initially anticipated.

Leonhart’s notice says DEA “has also received notification from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that it required additional supplies of marijuana to be manufactured in 2015 to provide for ongoing and anticipated research efforts involving marijuana.”

NIDA recently made an expanded menu of marijuana strains of varying potency available to researchers.

Last August, DEA significantly increased the feds’ 2014 marijuana quota from 21,000 grams to 650,000 grams.

The agency is accepting public comment on the new proposal for the next 30 days.
