“I can Use my Police Officer Powers…”
Monday morning, I and two others accompanied a friend to court. She was arrested at a police brutality protest in Sacramento, and we wanted to support her. When I walked into the court, the bailiff asked everyone to remove their hats. I ignored this request until I was singled out. When he asked me to remove my hat, I asked him if that was a “lawful order” we went back and forth, but rather than cause some form of problem for my friend, I removed my hat.
The bailiff continued to issue orders to the occupants of the courthouse. “Turn off your cell phones” “Take that bluetooth out of your ear” as well as other arbitrary demands. When he mentioned the man wearing the bluetooth, I muttered “holy shit”. This prompted the bailiff to ask “who swore?” Again I ignored him, and he called the deputies to remove me from the courtroom. The deputies showed up, and the guy I was sitting next to got up, and left. I sat back down as if I wasn’t involved. The deputy threatened to drag me from the courtroom, if I did not leave with him.
Once we were outside I pulled out my camera, he attempted to ID me. I refused, and with a little help from one of the members of the National Lawyer’s Guild was able to maintain my anonymity, and reenter the courtroom.
