Israeli forces have reportedly crossed the border into Syria and carried out air raids on a military base belonging to government forces.
Israeli military officials have yet to officially announce the attack. But the move is viewed as an effort to prevent weapons from being transferred to the Shia Muslim group Hizbollah, which has been fighting against Israel. The Syrian government of President Bashar al-Assad is also Shia Muslim.
Media reports from the Middle East say the airstrike was conducted late Friday night on a base about 50 kilometers northeast of the capital Damascus. Troops stationed there are in charge of strategic weapons and long-range missiles.
