“You Almost Become the Weather.” – Leif Haugen

Tyler Bass – “To combat fire, the Forest Service scatters hundreds of fire lookouts throughout the American West. Near the Canadian border in Montana’s Flathead National Forest, lookout Leif Haugen lived at Thoma Lookout, on the side of a mountain, alone for a summer. The work attracts solitary and self-reliant individuals whose entire emotional mind-set benefits from the cool breezes, chipper colleagues by radio, and long walks to get water every day.

“There’s something about keeping things simple that is absolutely resonant and feels good.” Sometimes, said Haugen, the moon was so bright he could read by it.”
