MeBai was with her mother for only 3 and a half years before being sold into the tourism industry, where she was subjected to an extremely abusive ‘training programme’ to break the spirit of baby elephants. She was forced to carry tourists on her back, and because she was too young, she began to lose weight and was unable to continue working.
Fortunately, MeBai was retired early and brought her to ENP, which included her in the Pamper a Pachyderm program. Me-Bai was nervous and wary of people when she first arrived at the sanctuary, but she quickly learned that her new caretakers had no intention of abusing her in any way. The people caring for her traced her mother, and the two were reunited. And now her mother has also been retired so that the two of them can live together and be rehabilitated with the goal of eventually being free to live in the wild again.
