We all heard of ISIS, PLO, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram…but have you heard of these terrorist groups? Here are the ten most little known terrorist organizations in the world. Despite being little known, they are quite powerful.
The direct translation from Russian to English is “The People’s Will”. The organization was founded in 1878 and is a left-wing underground movement that has been trying to radically fix Russian society. Not only did its members want the Tsar dethroned, but they desired to nationalize industries and create a socialist state. The ideals of Narodnaya Volya inspired other groups in Russia, such as the Social Revolutionary Party, and the founding of the Soviet Union.
The Japanese Red Army was founded in 1971 in Lebanon by Fusako Shigenobu. In the 1970s, the kaleidoscopic idealism gave way to pessimism and a widespread feeling that non-violent revolution was the wrong way to go. Rather than organizing mass protests, a certain group in Japan began using bombs and bullets to achieve their goals. Their goal was to remove the Japanese royal family from power and was involved with the PLO and other anti-Israeli groups in the Middle East. One of their first acts was the Lod Airport Massacre, which saw members conduct a shooting spree that killed 26 people and wounded 79 others.
The direct translation of this group from Italian to English is “New Order”. The movement began in the 1950s as an extra-parliamentary group of the far right. It utilized many of the same policies ad ideas of the National Fascist Party, that was banned. As a result, the Italian government forced the organization to disband in the 1970s. Unfortunately, it still operated underground and collaborated with other far-right groups during the “Years of Lead”. During this time, the group carried out a number of bombings that served to heighten tensions throughout Italy, the most notable one was Milan’s Piazza Fontana that killed 16 and injured 88 others.
This terrorist organization tries to twist religious texts around in their own way with hopes to harm others. They use violence to combat abortion and homosexual activities and are often seen attacking gay night cubs and abortion clinics. Their most famous member, Eric Rudolph, placed a bomb at the1996 Olympics in Atlanta, which killed 2 and injured 150. Rudolph saw this as a necessary action to combating abortion.
ALF sees itself as the modern day underground railroad for animals. Their attacks often involve freeing animals from labs, farms and factories. They claim to be peaceful and compare their actions to people who tried to destroy gas chambers during the Holocaust. Unfortunately, they are causing millions of dollars in damages to farmers and scientists, while also harming the animals who they are trying to save. Many of the animals they supposedly are trying to save cannot survive in the wild without proper care and as a result die.
This terrorist group desires to establish an independent “Bodoland” stand for the people living north of the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India. The group was founded in 1983 and a majority of the cadres were Bodo Christian. A ceasefire took into effect in 2005, although there were many violent incidents since then.
