Last Friday in a sold-out event in Salt Lake City, primatologist Jane Goodall was speaking about her work and the future of chimpanzees when she shared her opinion on a more controversial topic: genetically modified organisms (GMO’s).
Goodall appeared with Steven Druker, author of the book “Altered Genes, Twisted Truths,” in a talk sponsored by the Pax Natura Foundation. Druker’s intention by writing his book is to wipe out genetically modified organisms from the world’s food supply. Goodall thanked Druker for writing the book, and as she herself wrote the forward, stated that the book substantiated her concerns that genetically engineered foods were dangerous.
Jane stated, “We’re poisoning the land, we’re poisoning animals, and I truly believe we’re poisoning ourselves.” She pointed to superbugs that have become resistant to pesticides, weeds resistant to herbicides, and isolated animal studies in Europe and Australia where she said rats and pigs suffered from a variety of health issues when consuming genetically engineered crops.
