One of the things that has always fascinated me was the ability of art, artists, music, musicians, satirists, comedians, and other performers to shatter programming, illusions, and habitual patterns in people. Its also the reason they are often the first to persecuted by religions, dictators, and another control freaks who have no sense of humor or art in their soul.  We have been programmed to expect wisdom and truth to come from men in pin striped grey suits..

I have had a long time interest in the trickster figure. I gave a talk on this subject in Houston, Texas, in February 1965.[i] Before that I would have read anthropological studies about this figure, particularly Radin's classic monograph.[ii] At this time I had no idea that I would have, a decade later, to take more than an academic curiosity in this enigmatic character.

Anthropologists and folklorists have described and compiled hundreds of oral stories about the Trickster from folk societies all over the world.[iii] The actual number of trickster names is difficult to count: in one dictionary there are over 30 different names, and possibly this could be increased.
