Top 10 Animated Series for Adults Only
Cartoons aren’t just for children. The humor and anecdotes in some of the following cartoon shows quite simply could never be made if they were live-action as animation helped open the door to so many off the wall premises and very mature jokes. Although some of the TV shows on the top ten list can still be enjoyed by younger viewers, they have so much more going on that can only really be appreciated by an adult mindset. So let’s take a look at which Animated Series for adults made it to our top ten list:
10. Adventure Time
Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. The series follows the adventures of Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada), a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio), a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch).
9. Beavis & Butthead
Beavis and Butt-head is an American animated sitcom created and designed by Mike Judge. The series originated from Frog Baseball, a 1992 short film by Judge originally aired on Liquid Television. After seeing the short, MTV signed Judge to develop the concept. The series first ran from March 8, 1993 to November 28, 1997. In 1996, the series was adapted into the animated feature film Beavis and Butt-head Do America. It was revived in 2011 and new episodes began airing on MTV from October 27, 2011 to December 29, 2011. Later, reruns aired on other Viacom properties, including MTV2, Comedy Central and UPN.
8. Robot Chicken
Robot Chicken is an American stop motion animated sketch-comedy television series, created and executive produced by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich along with co-head writers Douglas Goldstein and Tom Root for Adult Swim. The writers, especially Green, also provide many of the voices. Senreich, Goldstein, and Root were formerly writers for the popular action figure hobbyist magazine ToyFare. Robot Chicken has won an Annie Award and three Emmy Awards.
7. Bob’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers is an American animated sitcom created by Loren Bouchard for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series centers on the Belchers—parents Bob and Linda, and their children Tina, Gene, and Louise—who run a hamburger restaurant. The family was conceived by Bouchard after developing Home Movies. Since its debut on January 9, 2011, the series has broadcast 88 episodes. While reviews for the first season were mixed, feedback for subsequent seasons has been very positive. After the first season, Bento Box Entertainment was replaced by Wilo Productions and Buck & Millie Productions. All seasons were produced in association with 20th Century Fox Television, and is distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The series premiere, “Human Flesh”, drew in 9.38 million viewers, making it the highest-rated series premiere of the season and also finished 9th in the ratings for the week it aired.
6. Family Guy
The Family Guy is an American adult animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series centers on the Griffins, a family consisting of parents Peter and Lois; their children Meg, Chris, and Stewie; and their anthropomorphic pet dog Brian. The show is set in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island, and exhibits much of its humor in the form of cutaway gags that often lampoon American culture. The family was conceived by MacFarlane after developing two animated films, The Life of Larry and Larry & Steve.
5. The Maxx
The Maxx is an American comic book series created by Sam Kieth and published originally monthly by Image Comics, then was collected in trade paperback collections from DC Comic’s Wildstorm imprint. Starting from November 2013 it has been republished by IDW with new colors and improved scans of the original artwork by Sam Kieth and Jim Sinclair. The comic book, which stars a character of the same name, spawned an animated series that aired on MTV. The first appearance of The Maxx was in Primer #5, published by Comico Comics.
