“Lovely” and “perfect” were the words 92-year-old Joy Lofthouse used to describe the way she felt when she recently flew in a Spitfire for the first time in more than 70 years.

Lofthouse is an Air Transport Auxiliary veteran whose job during the second World War was to fly Royal Air Force and Royal Navy warplanes from the front lines back to the factories for repairs. She was part of an all-female group of pilots who came to be known as the “Attagirls.”

Although Lofthouse flew 18 different types of aircraft, she said the Spitfire was always her favorite.

“I would never pass up the opportunity to fly one,” she said.

Lofthouse added that being able to fly once again made her feel “quite young.”
