COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — University of South Carolina student, Byron Thomas, a proud defender of the Confederate flag and “that one black friend” to racists everywhere, has now been invited to join the KKK.
A self-described Republican, Christ-following, Southern gentleman, Thomas is loud and proud in his love for the Confederate flag. As well as being a prolific social media user and giving number of interviews, including one with CNN, Thomas has also written a Washington Post editorial defending the flag.
Take a look at his Facebook post, followed by a video of his political philosophy.
Thomas says he supports the flag because it stands for his state and celebrates his his black ancestor’s role as a cook in the Confederate army.
Thomas, as South Carolina native, and all around flag fanatic, has said he hoped that people would recognize the flag as a symbol of his state’s storied history. Like the time they started the Civil War. Or the whole slavery thing.
In Thomas’ defense, he supports the removal of the flag from government property due to the rift it is causing in his much-loved home state. However, he maintains it is not a symbol of intolerance. And I reject getting kicked out of Waffle House as a symbol of my drinking problem.
Thomas also dismisses the idea that he is an “Uncle Tom” says that he loves who he is and is neither self-hating, nor an apologist for slavery.
So unprejudiced, in fact, that the Ku Klux Klan have invited him to join.
Jason Johns, of South Carolina’s White Knights of the KKK, formally extended the offer for Thomas to join, as a partial member. Probably about three fifths of one.
Thomas has yet to respond to the invitation.
