The suspect in the Charleston church massacre has reportedly been captured. USA Today reports that Dylann Roof has been taken into custody in Shelby, N.C. Authorities have not reported details of his apprehension.
Roof’s Facebook timeline contains (as of this writing) just one entry — a picture posted on May 21st at 11:17 p.m. — a photo supposedly of Roof that he set as his profile picture. It appears to have been taken in cooler weather at a swamp where the trees were heavy with drooping moss and the water green with thick algae. The young man’s demeanor is as cold and foreboding as the scene where the picture was taken.
The suspect, believed to be from or near Columbia, S.C., is said to be 21 years old, 5’9″, and approximately 120 pounds. The Post and Courier newspaper says that Roof is no stranger to South Carolina law enforcement:
Roof has been arrested twice in South Carolina as an adult, according to the State Law Enforcement Division. He was jailed March 1 in Lexington County on a drug charge and again on April 26 on a trespassing charge.
