Escaped murderer Richard Matt has been shot and killed by law enforcement officers 20 miles from the Canadian border – in an area that has been searched intensely in the recent days – sources told Daily Mail Online.
A border patrol tactical team gunned down the fugitive after he shot the driver of a camper van in near Lake Titus in Malone, New York, who called 911.
Within minutes, officers closed in on Matt and opened fire. He was killed instantly.
His fellow escapee David Sweat, who is believed to be armed, remains at large. However, canine units have a strong track on him as a line of officers push through an area, heading toward a road, according to Buffalo News.
In anticipation of a long night, police were seen bringing dozens of floodlights to Lake Titus shortly before 6pm.
It comes three weeks after their dramatic escape from the Clinton Correction Facility in Dannemora on June 6 – around 47 miles from Lake Titus.
