(Before It's News)

An annual wet and wild adventure in New York City has grown from just about 500 people a few years ago to over 64,000 this year, although the Waterfight NYC 2015 almost didn’t take place this year due to park restrictions, permits and other red tape.

Among the concerns from the Parks Department were worries that water being sprayed and people running around could ruin the grass, as well as innocent bystanders being at risk for getting sprayed. The Department also warned that event coordinators didn’t have proper permits, which are required for a gathering of more than 20 people, so law enforcement intervention could have been a possibility.

Event Organizer Brian Alberto De La Cruz’s response? “It’s not illegal to be in the park and have a water gun. That’s my answer to them.”

At any rate, the weekend event, which was originally planned to be held in Central Park, was moved to the Great Lawn after more than 64,000 people RSVP’d on the event’s Facebook page. And apparently there was no police intervention.

“It’s summer. It’s hot. So it’s a really good time to get wet. It’s a fun way to meet new people, too,” De La Cruz added.
