RABOVO, UKRAINE — One year after the incident, a video released by News Corp Australia is the first to show the immediate aftermath of the downing of flight MH17, which killed 298 passengers and crew on July 17, 2014.
In the chilling footage, pro-Russian Ukrainian separatist fighters walk through the wreckage thinking they had just shot down a government Sukhoi fighter jet. Once they start sifting through the debris and find the clothes and luggage of civilian passengers, they realize they have shot down a commercial plane instead.
Apart from introducing new evidence in the ongoing investigation of the plane’s downing, the fighters’ comments in the video raise valid questions about aviation safety, including whether a commercial plane should be allowed to fly over an active war zone.
The investigation of the accident is being conducted by the Dutch Safety Bureau.
