Journalists Signature Bond Included Ban from “Recording Police Up Close”
The incident took place in downtown Madison, Wisconsin where journalist Miles Kristan was handing out free pastries when he noticed what he believed to be an illegal stop by local Madison police.
The reporter was arrested for criminal disorderly conduct and for persons making unreasonable noise when he tried to point the stop out to residents.
On July 20th the Dane County District Attorney’s office asked Kristan to sign a signature bond preventing him from recording police up close and banning him from parts of downtown Madison.
“There where two officers right here, one of them was a sergeant, and I walked up to this man right here and I offered him a pastry and the cop put his fingers on me and pushed me away and told me to leave. I walked over that way and as I crossed the street and I yelled at the officer that he didn’t have a right to touch me, and the officer said, You want to make a big deal out of this? He followed me across the street and said sit down, your under arrest and that’s when the officer gave me this $439 ticket for obstructing when all I was doing was interrupting an illegal search, an illegal stop and this man’s rights form being violated.”
The arrest comes 10 days after Miles recorded a string of aggressive interactions between local citizens and officer Matt Baker known as Mr. “Pepper Spray”.
The officer gained the nickname after he was caught on tape threatening a friend of the reporters with pepper spray, he then refused to give his name and badge number. The policeman coincidentally was the same officer carelessly aiming his taser at a suspect nearby innocent women and children.
The journalist refused to sign the signature bond under those conditions, “It’s obvious that the Madison police are engaging in conduct that they don’t want filmed and are trying to silence my voice,” said Kristan.
