Sturm, Ruger & Co. introduced a new rifle today that combines the company’s take of the AR-15 rifle and a takedown rifle — the Ruger SR-556 Takedown.

“We are excited to bring the portability and ease of storage that we introduced with the 10/22 Takedown to a modern sporting rifle” said Mike Fifer, Ruger’s chief executive officer. “The SR-556 Takedown has all the reliability of the original two-stage piston SR-556 and adds new and innovative features for MSR shooters.”

The takedown’s novel feature allows for simple breakdown for easy storage and mobility. The barrel is removed from the upper receiver by simply moving the slider bar towards the breech, rotating the barrel and pulling it free — no tools required. Installation is simpler yet — just slide the barrel into the upper and twist until it locks.

The takedown mechanism provides a repeatable point of impact and employs a patent-pending, chrome-plated, two-stage piston driven operating system for a cleaner, cooler running, reliable firearm that is truly state-of-the-art.

The barrel assembly includes an elevation and windage adjustable flip-up front sight so that the zero stays with the barrel.

As the name implies, the SR-556 is chambered for 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington, but Ruger also offers a replaceable barrel kit chambered in 300 AAC Blackout.

The rifle ships with three 30-round Magpul PMags, three full length rail covers, a ballistic nylon case, and a lock. The SR-556 Takedown retails for $2,049.

  • Prime space on BIN – GUNS!!

  • Now if they would lose those ridiculous picatinny rails, it would be great. I don’t know why America is so in love with the ability to put a solar generator, camp stove, wi-fi tower, folding bicycle, sun umbrella, and Zodiac raft on their rifles. When moving shooting positions those rails are about the most irritating things ever mounted on a rifle. You need concertina wire handling gloves to hold onto them.
