The hard work of training cadets on the nation’s tall ship Eagle (VIDEO)
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is the training ground at sea for future officers of the service, but its no cruise ship.
Captured from the Germans at the end of World War II, USCGC Eagle is a 290 foot long training vessel originally built in 1936. Although she has a big Caterpillar diesel below decks for when the wind isn’t blowing, her main mode of transportation are her masts and sails that tower as high as 150 feet above deck.
While she has the nickname of “America’s Tall Ship” and is seen round the world waving the flag, her bread and butter is training cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as well as NOAA Officer Candidates.
And all those sails don’t raise themselves.
