They want brains… the VA, that is
They’re after your brains. No, not zombies, the government, in the name of science.
All kidding aside, in an effort to understand – and treat – a variety of disorders that affect the brain, the Veterans Affairs Department’s National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is asking for veterans to donate their brains for research.
Senior adviser to the VA, Dr. Matthew Friedman, said that although a great deal can be learned by studying images of the brain, there’s “no substitute for looking at the neurons themselves.”
The program seeks to study the brains of healthy adults with no mental health diagnose as well as those suffering from PTSD and other mental health conditions, both now – while the subject is alive – and in further detail after they are deceased. The research would be beneficial in understanding and therefore diagnosing and treating a variety of mental conditions, including dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Friedman said they would be “very grateful” to those who decide to participate, who should make their desire to participate known to their families or written in a will.
