Marine Corps veteran Toran Gaal, 28, lost both of his legs in a roadside bomb in Afghanistan four years ago, but despite his injuries, he has pressed on and just completed an amazing feat. He hand cycled nearly 4,000 miles across the country from coast to coast.

“The last year and a half I’ve tried to distinguish myself and kind of move away from that wounded warrior aspect. I feel, in my way, it’s a negative connotation toward us. We’re wounded, but we’re not out of a fight,” Gaal said.

Gaal started his cycling journey in Southern California on June 1 and arrived in Annapolis Friday. He concluded his trip Sunday by placing a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetery.

“I didn’t ever expect to be able to do this,” said Gaal, who decided to serve his county as a Marine after turning down a professional basketball contract.

Gaal said he couldn’t have asked for a better life.
