The San Luis Obispo Boot Camp is a program ran by the Huntington Park and South Gate Police Department’s. Located at the California Army National Guard Military Base, the program charges $400 and promises to help instill discipline and respect in troubled youths. What it doesn’t say on the brochures is that your children will be subjected to severe mental and physical abuse that would normally be unethical, immoral and illegal to subject adults to, let alone minors.
Huntington Park Police Department officers Marissa Larios and Patrick Nijland were arrested for suspicion of cruelty to a child, criminal conspiracy and abuse under the color of authority. Larios was additionally charged with misdemeanor battery.
Edgar Gomez and Carlos Gomez-Marquez of the South Gate Police Department were charged with the same four crimes as Larios, as noted above.
None of the four officers were formally booked, as their lawyers posted $200,000 bonds on them prior to their arrests.
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating claims of abuse made by participants about their treatment by officers at the boot camp for the past two months. Fifteen of the thirty seven minors interviewed, ranging from age 12-17, made claims of abuse. Video and photographic evidence, as well as witness accounts, were found to substantiate the claims.
Victims claimed to have been slapped, punched and had their hands stepped on as they did push-ups. It was also reported by some of the minors that they were taken away from the others and placed in a “dark room,” where they received beatings. Officers also threatened more severe brutality would follow if their victims spoke to anyone outside about what went on in the camp.
Eleven of the fifteen victims have retained a lawyer and are planning to file a lawsuit.
Were these four officers so naive or ignorant that they did not know that physical abuse creates a cycle of more abuse, especially in young people? Did they not realize their methods were training these kids to be even more brutal and sociopathic? Or did they just not care about the effect of their actions and really just enjoyed beating up people younger and weaker than themselves?
With so many horrifying incidents of police misconduct and brutality on a daily basis, how much longer do you think cops can keep their ‘heroes with a few bad apples’ status before it becomes understood by the masses that police departments all across the nation have become sanctuaries for the most depraved individuals to use as a shield for their atrocious criminal behavior?
Sending your kids to get straightened up by the police is like
sending them to learn vegetarianism with a pack of starved wolves.
