Wayans
The entire quote by Damon Wayans Jr, published in Young Voices, was, ““I don’t think we’ll make another ’til they stop smoking Black dudes. You know? Until they fix the police brutality.” This came after a caller into the radio show Wayans was on asked if he was interested in making a sequel to ‘Let’s Be Cops.’ Young Voices reports that:
Listeners could tell from the caller’s voice he was not expecting such a serious comment, as the show had been light-hearted and full of jokes for the first 10 minutes, Madame Noire reported. But Wayan’s demeanor quickly shifted when speaking on the issues black people are facing in America.
“I personally don’t want to make another one because I feel like I would be betraying my people,” Wayans continued.
The caller then responded in similar seriousness, “you know what, that’s some real life sh*t;” even though he added he was a little disappointed.
Those of us who contribute to this site, film the police or speak the simple truth that cops are NOT heros, know all too well how hard it is going against the grain. It would be easy for Wayans to, “Just do his job“, make the movie and cash the check. He’d be feeding his family and making his fans happy – maybe even ‘worshipped’ by some? I guess to some there’s more to the “job” than just a paycheck, fame or another’s perception of you. To some, there’s “some real life sh*t” going on here. So, kudos to Mr. Wayans for taking a stand on what he believes. I can only hope more with your audience do the same.
Yet, you don’t have to be a mega super star to make a stand, change or difference. Simply stand for what YOU believe in.
