Surgeon General Vivek Murthy while speaking at the Asian American Journalists Association convention gala in San Francisco on Saturday reaffirmed his stance on gun violence in the United States, calling it a public health epidemic.

Murthy, who was confirmed for the position in December, said he didn’t regret making the statement and that the backlash he received was disappointing but not a surprise, the Associated Press reported.

The National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment groups railed against the 37-year-old physician for his gun control stance, saying he’s trying to quarantine gun owners.

Other gun rights advocates feel the issue of guns is not a public health issue, but a constitutional matter, despite statistics gun control advocates point to which highlight that suicides make up two-thirds of gun deaths in the country.
