VIDEO: Another View Of July 31st Mauna Kea Arrests

MAUNA KEA – This is part two of a two part series examining the July 31st law enforcement action on Mauna Kea that resulted in seven arrests. Media was not present. The law enforcement action was filmed and distributed by the State of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, and was featured in our previous report. Now, we feature a different viewpoint. Footage taken by Lakea Trask shows the events from the perspective of the kia’i who have been blocking the Thirty Meter Telescope at the Hale Pohaku crosswalk for months. Trask, who avoided arrest but did receive citation, shares his video and his thoughts.

  • HILO – During her keynote address at the 23rd Annual Hawaii Conservation Conference at the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, Department of Land and Natural Resources chair Suzzane Case made some brief comments about the ongoing Mauna Kea conflict.
  • Case acknowledged the challenges of “controlling unlawful practices while upholding free speech and traditional and customary practices” during her time at the podium.
  • Case also spoke briefly on Governor David Ige’s plan to have DLNR resume management of 10,000 acres on Mauna Kea currently under lease by the University of Hawaii.
