Captain America co-creator reaches out to Deputy Goforth’s son (VIDEO)
After hearing the tragic tale behind a little boy, his murdered father, and the Captain America shirt that linked them, one of the men behind the comic reached out to help.
Earlier this month, Texas Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was laid to rest in a service in which both the lawman and his son were clad in matching Captain America shirts for the funeral, with the slain officer buried wearing his under his uniform.
Captain America was created in 1941 at the hands of legendary comic book men Jack Kirby and Syd Shores. Bellman, while still a teenager, did the backgrounds and help bring the original art to life. He later went on to work on a number of comics including Batman, the Human Torch, Wolverine and Sub Mariner.
Now retired in Florida at age 90, Bellman was touched by the Goforth story and wanted to do what he could for the late deputy’s son. This led to the artist signing and sending the boy an original drawing of Captain America to help give him strength.
“I talk from the heart,” Bellmen said. “I can feel the pain of that family.”
