2A Armament has been running down its goal of developing featherweight AR components from its skeletal machined receivers to their use of titanium instead of steel for small parts. Now the company’s working on a complete rifle with an impressive dry weight of only 5 pounds.
A halo project, the BLR-16 shows off an ability to engineer light components with conventional materials. 2A achieved this milestone by removing material from the receivers wherever possible, not by substituting for polymer or magnesium alloys for the receiver composition, and also use lot of titanium.
The BLR-16 has a titanium barrel nut, low-profile titanium gas block, titanium takedown pins and a titanium T3 compensator. The compensator is an in-house design that combines the flash suppressing performance of a birdcage flash hider with porting to combat muzzle rise and an internal baffle to reduce recoil. In addition to cutting weight titanium is also corrosion-resistant.

Every rifle is built on 2A’s Balios-Lite 7075-T6 aluminum alloy receivers. The receivers are skeletal, with lightening cuts all over, no forward assist and just a small shell deflector.
The receivers come equipped with a takedown spring retainer, threaded bolt catch pin and a tensioning screw to remove any wobble between the upper and lower. The lower features an integral, enlarged trigger guard and oversized, flared magwell.
A 16-inch 416R .223 Remington/5.56 NATO stainless steel pencil profile barrel with a 1-in-8 twist, mid-length gas system and QPQ nitride finish is standard on the BLR-16, a solid configuration for any all-purpose rifle. The 8620 bolt carrier group also gets the nitride treatment.
2A will be offering the BLR-16 with their 15-inch 6061 aluminum BL-Rail with user’s choice of KeyMod or M-Lok slots, a Magpul MIAD pistol grip, adjustable Mission First Tactical Battlelink Minimalist Stock and ALG-ACT trigger. Availability is expected this September or October with a suggested retail price of $2,177.
