Chicago has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the country. It also has a new record for shooting deaths in a single day.

The Windy City had nine shooting deaths on Wednesday — its highest rate of single-day fatalities in over a decade. On July 5, 2003, there were 10 homicides in the city. The Chicago Tribune did an extensive analysis of its records before reporting Wednesday’s grim milestone.
The newspaper added that 13 people were shot over the course of 36 hours. Ages of the victims ranged from an 11-year-old boy to a 60-year-old-man.

“You can’t even walk to the store without getting shot in the face,” South Shore resident Will Calloway, 26, told the newspaper. “You know what I’m saying? We in the black community, a lot of these brothers and sisters, they don’t have an education. You get Malcolm X here, you get a poor education, you get poor jobs. You be in a poor community. It creates crime.”
Calloway added that Chicago was the definition of “engineered chaos” because its allocation of resources allegedly short changes social services and mental-health clinics.
