(Before It's News)

Early Wednesday morning, the state of Georgia carried out the execution of Kelly Gissendaner by lethal injection, the first woman to be executed in the state in more than 70 years, despite desperate pleas from her adult children and even Pope Francis to spare her life.

Even in Gissendaner’s last minutes, her children opted to spend the time pleading with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles – all to no avail.

“We chose to try and save her life, and they still denied us,” said Gissendaner’s daughter, Kayla.

Gissendaner’s life ended at 12:21 a.m. She was sentenced to death for the part she played in her husband’s death nearly 20 years ago, plotting with her lover, Gregory Owen, and convincing him to kill her husband, Douglas, in February 1997. Douglas died after he was hit in the back of the head, then brutally stabbed in the neck approximately 10 times by Owen, who received life in prison as part of a plea bargain when he testified against Gissendaner.

According to Gissendaner’s children, she turned her life around during the time she was incarcerated, and reportedly sang “Amazing Graze” during the course of her execution.
