The father of a three-year-old Syrian boy found drowned on a beach in Turkey has told the BBC of the harrowing circumstances of his death. Alan Kurdi's father Abdullah said that shortly after their boat left Turkey for the Greek island of Kos it was hit by waves and the captain swam off. “I tried to catch my children and wife but there was no hope. One by one they died,” Mr Kurdi said.
The family were among thousands fleeing Syria and seeking a new life abroad.

The family of the drowned Syrian toddler the photo of whose lifeless body on a Turkish beach sparked outrage had been denied asylum in Canada.
According to Canadian media accounts on Thursday, the Vancouver-based aunt of the three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, whose corpse was washed ashore in Turkey on Wednesday, had applied to obtain Canadian refugee status for her relatives in Syria’s war-ravaged town of Kobani, which was largely destroyed after being attacked by the Takfiri Daesh terrorists in June 2015.
Press reports in Canada recounted the story on Thursday, citing Fin Donnelly, a member of the Canadian House of Commons, who had submitted the refugee status application on the family’s behalf.

There is sympathy in Brussels for the dilemma facing Hungary as the latest flashpoint in Europe's migration crisis. But there are precious few admirers of either the rhetoric or the solutions put forward by Hungary's controversial Prime Minister, Viktor Orban. “It's Germany's problem,” he said in the European Parliament. And the moral thing to say to refugees? “Please don't come here.”
His interlocutors in the European institutions made no attempt to sugar coat their disagreements with the pugnacious Mr Orban. There were – unusually – very public rebukes.

A refugee couple, with the woman clutching a baby in her arms, lie down on railway tracks in Hungary in protest after Hungarian officials prevented their train from leaving for Western Europe.
The incident took place on Thursday after the train stopped at Bicske near one of Hungary's four main camps. Several hundred other refugees, who had likewise boarded the train in Budapest's Keleti station in hopes of heading for western destinations, protested by refusing to come off.
Worst refugee crisis since World War II ~ link ~
Europe's migrant crisis has been dubbed the worst since WWII with a record number of 107,500 migrants crossing the EU's borders in July. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa to start a new life in Europe, but many meet a tragic end there.
