Top 10 Celebrities Estranged From Their Parents
Not all celebrities come from happy families. In fact, some of the rich-and-famous definitely drew the short end of the stick when it came to parental units. Here are ten celebrities with the big bucks who are estranged from their parents; some of whom are very famous as well:
10. Courtney Love
The lead singer of Hole and ex-wife of Rock Star, Kurt Cobain, was criminally neglected as a child. Courtney Love’s mother, Linda Carroll, raised her among the communes and counter-culture of Oregon in the late 60’s and early 70’s. As a child, Love was called “Pee Girl” by her classmates because nobody ever washed her clothes. Today, she is still called “Pee Girl” by the media because nobody ever washed her raging drug addiction and ever-growing mental health issues Meanwhile, her mother Carroll married, divorced and remarried three times. At the age of 12, Love landed in a juvenile correction facility before spending her early teenage years between boarding and reform schools. Her relationship with her biological father Hank Harrison was equally horrible, consisting mostly of Harrison giving his underaged daughter drugs that caused her distress later in life. At 16, Love gained legal emancipation from her “no good” mother.
9. Angelina Jolie
The daughter of Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina Jolie was a Hollywood child born into fame. Jolie saw her parents divorce at a young age amidst accusations that her father was mentally abusive and an adulterer. Jolie’s various estrangements and reconciliations with her father have often be made public by the media and one reconciliation found Voight and Jolie appearing together in one of the Tomb Raider films. However, Voight seems to have a hard time keeping his mouth shut when it comes to publicly expressing opinions on his daughter and how she lives her life. He even went out of his way to call out her mental issues. Of late, father and daughter appear to have called it truths, and Voight was recently photographed hanging with the Jolie-Pitt clan in Italy. However, he was never invited to her wedding to Brad Pitt, which caused the relationship to go sour.
8. Lindsay Lohan
Michael and Dina Lohan were horrible parents long before Lindsay became an irrational adult and very wild star. The father did jail time for insider trading, was arrested for assault and a DUI, and may have committed adultery resulting in a child born out of wedlock. Michael and Dina separated and reunited twice during Lindsay’s lifetime before finally calling it quits in 2007; no wonder Lohan is so screwed up. As a child, Lindsay had to listen to their private mudslinging, but when she became famous they took to the hatred towards each other to public. To top it off, Michael and Dina shamelessly leapt onto Lindsay’s famous coattails; each parent separately lobbied for their own reality show! And it was not because they were particularly interesting — everything each of of them did was in an attempt to make more money off of their daughter’s success.
7. Adele
Adele is not someone to keep quiet about her sour relationship with her father. The “Someone Like You” singer even once said she would spit in her father’s face if she ever saw him again. What the heck did he do? She was abandoned by her father when she was only 3 years old. After a childhood of only sporadic contact, she said she hasn’t had contact with him in 10 years — so she’s super pissed that he’s running his mouth about her now.
6. Eminem
Rapper Eminem was abandoned by his father when he was just 18m old. In 2002, his mother Debbie Nelson filed a 7 million dollar lawsuit against Eminiem, claiming he defamed her with his songs. She then wrote a tell-all book repudiating her son’s claims that she was an alcoholic and drug addict and that they lived in poverty when Eminem was little. Debbie tried to turn the tables by painting a picture of Eminem as a spoiled and naughty child. However, while on her “deathbed” from breast cancer in 2009, Nelson publicly begged for reconciliation and Eminem paid off her medical bills.
5. Roseanne Barr
In the early 90’s sitcom-star and commedian Roseanne Barr began to claim that she, as well as her siblings, had been physically and sexually abused by parents: Helen and Jerome Barr. Barr’s first memoir mentioned nothing about these issue; she claims to have repressed the memories until much later. Remix! Barr penned a second memoir (a do-over) which exposed the abuse and its effect on her, including what she says is multiple personality disorder. Barr’s siblings and parents of course denied everything, hired a high-profile lawyer, and publicly called Barr a liar. Lie detector tests used on Roseanne’s parents came back with negative results. Even so, Roseanne Barr remained estranged from her family for 10 years after that. On February 14, 2011, Barr and her sister Geraldine appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show where Barr admitted that the word “incest” could have been the wrong word to use and should have waited until her therapy was over before revealing the “darkest time” in her life.
