(Before It's News)

What was supposed to be a reenactment of the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, over the weekend turned out to be not so OK when two people were injured after one of the actors accidentally fired live rounds from his revolver.

Actor Ken Curtis was shot by Tom Carter and was airlifted to the hospital, where he was treated and released the following day. Debbie Mitchell, who was a part of the audience at the time of the shooting, received minor lacerations from bullet fragments, but refused medical attention.

According to Tombstone mayor Dustin Escapule, the guns used by the actors, which are normally loaded with blanks, are religiously checked by a safety specialist before each performance, but Carter was apparently running late for Sunday’s show and his gun was never checked.

Tombstone marshal Bob Randall said Carter’s revolver was placed in a safe several months ago and wasn’t removed until this weekend. Randall said nobody knows how live rounds ended up in the gun because it was loaded with blanks before, but also added that ultimately the responsibility of the safety measure fell on Carter.
