(Before It's News)

drug tunnel

A high-tech tunnel used for smuggling drugs through the United States border was discovered by authorities before any contraband was believed to delivered through the system.

The tunnel, which measured 2,600 feet long – about the length of eight football fields – was constructed with metal beams to prevent a collapse, ventilated, lit and equipped with a rail system. It ran from warehouses in Tijuana to San Diego.

The discovery of the tunnel led to the arrest of 22 people – six in the U.S. and 16 in Mexico – and the seizure of 12 tons of marijuana – two out of the U.S. and 10 in Mexico.

According to authorities who have been working the investigation since May, the first load of marijuana was to be moved through the tunnel Wednesday, the same day authorities made the arrests, and they do not believe that any other drugs made it through undetected.
