Officer Previously Arrested For Attempted Murder, Arrested Again For Choking Girlfriend

An eleven year veteran with the New Orleans Police Department has been placed on ‘emergency suspension without pay’ after being arrested on Wednesday. Officer Robert Hurst was arrested for assault after he and his girlfriend got into an argument.
According to the victim, Officer Hurst pulled her hair, began pushing her, and then choked her. NOPD’s Public Integrity Bureau (Internal Affairs) confiscated Hurst’s badge and department-issued firearm, along with all other department-owned property. The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s office is handling the criminal investigation, according to NOPD
This isn’t the first time Officer Robert Hurst has been in trouble. In 2014, Officer Hurst was placed on ‘emergency suspension without pay’ after another allegation of domestic abuse. The charge stemmed from a domestic abuse investigation by the department’s Public Integrity Bureau in April of that year. That time, he was charged with attempted second-degree murder. However, the District Attorney’s Office dropped the attempted murder charge, but let the domestic abuse charge stand.
Had the DA had big enough balls to stand up to the ‘thin blue line’, maybe his current girlfriend would not have been abused and almost chocked to death. Let’s hope the current DA has a lot more balls and commonsense.
In 2011, Hurst was seen in a video, in which he was wearing his official police costume pants, while letting a bar patron wear his police shirt. Though he broke numerous department rules, he was only suspended for 18 days and was reassigned to a different unit. Superintendent Ronal Serpas said at the time,
And for this particular employee I can’t even bring myself to call him an officer for this particular employee to be so flippant with the use of this uniform knowing how many people have lost their life in service of this uniform disgusts me to my core.
Hurst admitted that he had been drinking heavily that night in a fraternity pledge challenge while in uniform, according to civil service records.
