“With all the violence and murder and killings we’ve had in the United States, I think you will agree that we must keep firearms from people who have no business with guns or rifles,” Senator Robert F. Kennedy told a crowd of some 1,500 people from the steps of the Douglas County Courthouse in Roseburg, Oregon, on May 27, 1968.

The speech, whose attendees included protesters who opposed the senator’s call for greater gun control, was given during Kennedy’s presidential campaign nearly 50 years ago. Less than two weeks after his stop in Roseburg, Kennedy was shot and killed.
