A Russian passenger plane carrying 224 people has crashed over central Sinai, Egypt’s Prime Minister’s office has confirmed.
The plane was travelling from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to the Russia city of St Petersburg and lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after take off.
The aircraft was a Airbus A321 operated by the Russian airline Kogalymavia, according to the RIA news agency.
A statement from the prime minister’s office said a cabinet level crisis committee would meet to deal with the crash.

A Russian plane carrying over 220 people from Egypt to Russia disapperaed from radars, according to Russian and Egyptian authorities. It is believed to have crushed in central Sinai.
Kolavia Flight 7K9268, an Airbus A320, went off radar 23 minutes after taking off from Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, Sergey Izvolskiy told the media citing preliminary data.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN)A Russian passenger airliner crashed Saturday in the Sinai, Egypt’s Prime Minister Sharif Ismail said in a statement.
The Prime Minister is meeting with ministers and security officials regarding the crash. Russian state media reported that the plane was carrying 224 people.
The Northern Sinai medical department declared a state of emergency, according to the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper. Al-Ahram repored that more than 20 ambulances had been directed to the crash site, between the villages of Al-Kuntillah and Al-Kaseema in central Sinai.
