Russia tests ray gun that can BLIND enemies as it steps up fight to WIPE OUT Islamic State
RUSSIA is testing a terrifying new weapon that can blind enemies using rays as it steps up the fight to obliterate the Islamic State in Syria.
The country’s defence vehicles could soon be equipped with the device, which fires out light strong enough to block sensors and cloak human vision.
It will provide cover for troops by dazzling enemies and sabotaging hostile reconnaissance attempts.
The “visual optical jammer” named Grach has four projectors and can be remotely controlled by crews.
The device was revealed at a military expo in Russia this week and the Navy are due to start testing a prototype later this month.
It will be used on hovercrafts, amphibious vehicles and hydrofoils but developers hope it will target terrorists or pirates in future.
Deputy director of device creator OPK Sergey Skokov said: “It can save lives and hardware and causes a strong psychological effect on the enemy,
“Not only foreign navies, but also border guards and law enforcement agencies fighting against piracy on the seas may find it useful.”
The weapon could be used in Putin’s brutal onslaught against ISIS which was stepped up yesterday as Russian jets smashed 27 jihadi hotspots.
Moscow has launched a ruthless campaign on the terror group in a bid to wipe them out forever.
Russian airstrikes were said to have hit 71 armoured vehicles, 30 other vehicles, 19 command facilities, 2 communication centres, 23 depots with fuel and ammunition, 6 plants used to make car bombs, several artillery pieces and training camps.
Russia’s bombings have weakened the morale of militants and have sent thousands on the run, according to the country’s defence ministry.
Insiders say Putin is poised to mobilise 150,000 reservists into Syria after conscripting them into the Russian army earlier this week.
But US defence secretary Ash Carter criticised Russia’s unpredictable military action, saying that cruise missiles had been fired without giving any advance notice.
