This must be one of the stupidest things anyone has ever done on social media or live streaming apps.
Alcohol affects your judgment, depth perception as well as crucial motor skills that are required to drive responsibly. It’s easy to think you are driving as you usually do when truly you are not. When the police take notice you could be hit with a DUI/DWI charge. This is the best case scenario. Getting into an accident could cost you your life and the life of others affected.
That’s what happened just a little over two weeks ago. 3 kids, aged 2, 4, and 8, were killed alongside their grandfather in Vaughan, ON when their minivan was hit by an alleged drunk driver who failed to stop at a stop sign. The drunk driver had a history of driving offences, including speeding and running through a stop sign.
A 23 year old Whitney Beall filmed a 11 minute video on Periscope of her driving drunk. As viewers were watching in horror they pleaded for Beall to pull over. When she didn’t, they called 911 and reported her crimes.
Lakeland Police doesn’t allow police officers to access social media channels while on the job and it has been reported that most didn’t even know what Periscope is. However, one tech-savvy officer did and decided to open a personal account in order to watch the video and identify landmarks to pinpoint Beall’s location and we sure are glad he did. Unsurprisingly, when pulled over, she failed the breathalyzer test and was arrested.
The lesson of the day: don’t post any criminal activity on your social media channels because nothing is deemed safe from police the moment it becomes public. Oh yeah, and do us all a favor and never drive drunk.
